Housekeeping: For the next few weeks, SL will have release and HL will work on the following chapters: 7 (Nucleic Acids) and 8 (Metabolism). We will start today with 7.1: DNA Replication. This is a lot more detailed than what you learned in Chapter 2. You will work on Mission 1 and answer the KOGNITY questions I sent.
Nucleic Acids I Nucleic Acids II Housekeeping: For the next few weeks, SL will have release and HL will work on the following chapters: 7 (Nucleic Acids) and 8 (Metabolism). We will start today with 7.1: DNA Replication. This is a lot more detailed than what you learned in Chapter 2. You will work on Mission 1 and answer the KOGNITY questions I sent earlier today. You should have this mission completed by the end of the period.
Click HERE for the Missions. Housekeeping. We are now working in Chapter 1: Cells. We should be finished with this chapter the week before final exams. There are two big labs that we will do for this unit, so there will be occasions where you will have to complete Missions at home the night before so that you have time to do the labs.
Click HERE for Missions. Housekeeping: On Friday, September 20, you will do a Macromolecules Lab. You need to make sure you prepare ahead of time by reviewing the material here.
We are now in the last third of Chapter 2. Missions for 2.7 can be found here, and missions for 2.8 & 2.9 can be found here. After we are done with Chapter 2, we will go back to Chapter 1, which is all about cells. We will not cover HL Chs. 7 & 8 until Spring semester. All students must come up with three (3) potential IA topics within the next three months. The topics need to be broken down like so: RQ, hypothesis, IV, DV and how you plan to collect your data. Potential topics need to be submitted to me via email by January 10st. As part of your study of molecular biology, you will investigate the presence of macromolecules in different foods. You will run different chemical tests to determine the presence of proteins, carbohydrates and lipids. We will do this lab on Friday, September 20. Here is the link you need to prepare for the lab.
The lab report is due October 2, 2019. Housekeeping: There was an error in last week's Housekeeping. Here are the chapters HL will cover in addition to 1 and 2: 7 and 8. Chapter 2's last chunk covers DNA, photosynthesis and respiration. For HL, Chapter 7 is the DNA chap and Chapter 8 is the metabolism chap. So after we cover Chapter 2, SL will be on an extended release while HL covers Chapters 7 & 8.
Your first test is currently scheduled for Friday August 30. As we are covering only SL material, everyone will have exactly 45 minutes to take the test. We will review the first half of the period and you'll test the second half. We are now investigating the second part of Molecular Biology: 2.4 (Proteins), 2.5 (Enzymes), & 2.6 (DNA RNA Structure). Click HERE for Missions. Housekeeping: Welcome back to school! For those of you new to BIS, I'm Dr. Holt, the Mad!Scientist! I will show you how to use this website. Be sure to bookmark it for easy access.
You guys need to begin researching IA topics. You have some time this semester, but you need to get a topic approved by January. This semester SL will cover Chapters 2 and 1 in that order. For HL, this means that you will cover Chapters 2, 8, and 1. There are several labs that go along with the content. It is imperative that you stay on top of your coursework. You will use a supplemental IB guide for in-class practice and homework. I will let you know when the guides are ready for checkout. There is a lot of drawing in this course. You are expected to keep an art kit (pencils, pens, erasers, markers, etc) in your bag so that you can sketch when the lesson calls for it. The IB tests and exams will require you to be able to draw from memory. Chapter 2 is a very long chapter with nine (9) sections. We will cover three sections at a time and you will be tested after each chunk. It will take about 1.5 weeks to cover each chunk. You will have corresponding Kognity assignments for each chunk. The first Kognity assignment has already been sent to you and is due next Friday. Okay then, let's get into it. Click HERE for Missions. Your final exam is next week. For today, you will work on either (1) mesocosm logbook, or (2) final exam study guide. The mesocosm logbook is due Friday.
After your final exam, you will work on finding IA topics. The topic (broken down into RQ, hypothesis and IV/DV/Controls) is due May 31st. In June, we will create a deadline calendar for your IA. |
