Housekeeping: We are now investigating solution chemistry. In this unit, you will complete a solutions lab and a research project over food-borne illnesses. This is a relatively short unit in terms of content, but the lab and research paper will take some time. I expect for us to complete the content before March 4, 2019.

Housekeeping: Happy New Year! Welcome back! I hope everybody had a bomb! winter break. I know I did.
So we'll begin 2019 with a new unit: biochemistry. We'll spend at least three weeks on it and there's a big lab associated with this unit that we'll do the third week.
Go HERE for Missions.
You will spend about 15-20 minutes completing a course evaluation for this semester. You're given 5 prompts. Please answer the prompts into a word document and print it out. This is anonymous, so please do not write your name on the document. Please use Times New Roman font size 12. Place the anonymous document into my inbox.
Thanks so much for your participation.
Please comment on the following:
1. The content. How well do you understand the material being covered this semester? Which unit was your favorite and which unit did you not like? Please explain why and why not.
2. The instructor. Please evaluate Dr. Holt's instructional skill. What do I do that you like and appreciate, and what do I do that you wish I would improve upon or stop altogether. Please elaborate. Don't worry about hurting my feelings; please speak your mind. Remember this is anonymous. Just be respectful.
3. The assignments. Which assignment types do you like and which ones do you not like? How can I improve in this area?
4. Your progress. How well do you think you have learned the material? What can Dr. Holt change, adjust, modify, or get rid of that you think will improve how well you learn the content?
5. Free Thought: Please discuss anything about this course (so far) that you like or do not like that was not covered in the previous prompts.
Housekeeping: We are almost finished with the human body! We have two more systems to cover: Immunity & Reproduction. After we finish these, you will have to design a roller coaster based on one of the body systems This is your semester final exam. You will have three full weeks to design and construct your roller coaster. The coaster is due December 17, 2018.

We are now working on the third Human Body cluster: Digestive, Excretory & Endocrine. There is one more cluster after this one. Your final exam will be the construction of an amusement park ride based on a particular body system. So make sure you're keeping up with the notes, readings and videos. I expect for us to be completely done with the body systems by the end of November at the earliest. You should start thinking about who you want to work with (you guys will work in pairs). As far as selection of a body system...you guys will pull from a hat.
Your test date over cluster 3 should be either November 12 or 13; you choose.

Today you will design a lab for the skeletal and muscular systems. It does not mean that we will actually do the lab. This is a measure of how well you can design a lab.
Your design should include the following:
1. Brief introduction
3. Research Question
5. IV/DV/Controls (if needed)
6. Materials List
7. Step-by-step procedure
8. Kind of data to be collected.
Do some online research to help you find some possible lab activities for the skeletal and muscular systems. You have one hour to research and submit your design lab to Managebac. Please make sure that it is 1.5 spacing, Times New Roman size 12 font.
We are now in Unit 2 of the Human Body curriculum. We will be studying the skeletal, muscular and skin systems.
It is now time to do an assessment for Option D. You will do a short (two pages) report on a disease that affects either the circulatory, respiratory or nervous systems.
Outline your research paper according to the following:
I. Introduction. Introduce your disease. What is it? What causes it? How is it contracted? Describe which segments of the world population are most likely to contract the disease (males, females, old people, young people, etc). How long does it last? Does it result in death?
II. Body paragraph 1. Describe the symptoms and side effects. Provide examples.
III. Body paragraph 2. Discuss how the illness is treated, if it can be. Provide examples.
IV. Conclusion. Summarize your findings. Evaluate the research that you have examined. By "evaluate," I mean use your opinion to decide if what you investigated has merit. Did you use good sources? Do you understand what the research says? Do you believe it is completely correct, partially correct, or incorrect? State why and/or why not.
You are required to use at least three sources (not Wikipedia, please). You must include citations in your essay. Use this link to Purdue OWL, as I would prefer you use APA style to reference your sources.
The first thing you should do, as you're doing your research is to outline your paper using the above format. Try to have 4-5 bullet points for paragraphs II and II. I will check your outlines and make suggestions on how to improve your essay. I will also check your sources and determine if they are appropriate.
Due date for essay is Monday, October 1st.
I am pleased with your progress as a whole. Let's keep this up!
