Welcome to The!Mad!Scientist! I'm Dr. Holt, and I'm mad about science! Below you'll find some basic classroom procedures that I expect for you to follow. This list is not all-inclusive and I may add to it or adjust it at a later date.
This course utilizes some flipped classroom techniques, is technology-rich, and thus requires the use of a device such as a tablet or a laptop with Internet access and Microsoft Excel. You can use your phone as a device if I say so. You are expected to come to class on time and be prepared when you arrive.
By “prepared,” I mean (a) you are in your seat, (b) your device is open to the daily agenda, (c) your homework is completed, and (d) you have questions.
In addition to your device, you will need a binder, paper, pencils, pens, and an open mind. You can take notes using whatever method works best: pen/paper, Evernote, Microsoft Word, Notepad, Pages, etc. Bear in mind that I do expect for you to take notes in class and as you read. A useful technique for taking good notes is the Cornell method. You can download an example of the template and this is a link on how to create a Cornell note template in Word.
I expect for you to check The!Mad!Scientist! every day even if class is not scheduled to meet because I may have to adjust assignments, lab schedules and due dates if necessary. The password to access The!Mad!Scientist! is on the board. Write it down. Be sure you are checking the correct Mad!Lab! agenda.
Be respectful of me and of your classmates. Come to class on time. Make sure your homework is complete. Please do not talk while I am talking. You will work in collaborative groups and while you may choose your own seat, bear in mind that I will adjust seating if it becomes necessary.
If you are absent, it is your responsibility to check the day’s agenda on The!Mad!Scientist! and keep up with the coursework. Failure to maintain your work directly influences laboratory work, quiz and exam scores. I do not give extra credit or additional assignments to bring up grades.
Let's work together and have a wonderful school year!
